Brenda left Andy to find Mac. He was on his phone, and she waited. He ended the call and turned to his wife.

“Besides being poisoned to death, Charlotte de Grey was also pregnant,” Mac said. He failed to see the disappointment in Brenda’s eyes.

“That’s what I came over here to tell you, Mac. Andy told me Charlotte told George about her pregnancy. He was very upset and walked away from her. Judith got it out of Andy and, according to him, Judith was left believing George was the father of the unborn child.”

They discussed more details and exchanged assumptions. “We can’t presume anything, Brenda. Did Andy tell you who the father was?”

Brenda shook her head. “I told him if he didn’t tell me, it was a matter of time before it would be known anyway. I sort of threatened him with withholding information in a murder case is a crime in itself. He still wouldn’t reveal that. You may have better luck with that one.”

Brenda told Mac she had stopped all cleaning of dishes in the kitchen until evidence could be collected from utensils Charlotte used during the intermission. Mac looked hard at Andy Fuller.

“He’s definitely upset,” Mac said. “I doubt he had anything to do with this crime.”

“Don’t be so quick about that, Mac. He may be a jealous man. He told me Charlotte carried on with more than one man. Those are his words. He was obviously in love with the flutist. Jealousy does much to a man’s ego.” Brenda hesitated. “Did the coroner state how far along Charlotte was in the pregnancy?”

“He just said it was early.”

Brenda left Mac and went to Charlotte’s dressing room. Just inside, she took a long whiff. The stale smell of cigar smoke filled her nostrils. Andy hadn’t mentioned Colin Hughes as someone who talked with Charlotte. Her keen sense of smell picked up another elusive odor. Brenda was sure it was a lavender scent. She glanced at the dressing table and then examined everything on it. No contents of the objects contained lavender. An officer was in the process of gathering items in Charlotte’s dressing room. He stood aside while Brenda searched intently for anything so far missed.

When Brenda emerged from the dressing room, she spotted Oliver Lister and motioned for him to approach her. “I have some questions for you, Oliver.”

He readily agreed to talk with her, though he wondered why the owner of the Sheffield Bed and Breakfast was the one to ask pertinent questions. She explained she was also a qualified officer of the law. He nodded and waited for her inquiry.

“I saw you talking with Charlotte several times in what appeared to be an intimate way. I also overheard her telling you she wasn’t interested in you. Did that make you angry?”

The familiar chuckle escaped. He shook his head. “Everyone wanted Charlotte to take notice of them. I mean, every male musician did. I had several flings early on with Charlotte. I admit it wasn’t pleasant when she rejected me.
